Sparkle this Christmas??

Christmas Do coming up? Not sure what to do with your hair or wondering what to wear? Well, I have a little idea I'd like to share. I love a bit of sparkle and don't know many girls out there who don't. I recently had a little girl and called her Florence and hope she grows up to love a little bit of sparkle too ;)
I found this dress on the TopShop website and thought it was just fabulous.

Follow the link below to take you to the dress on the TopShop website.

This dress is also available in black for those who just love a LBD

The model here is wearing a strappy stiletto but personally I would wear a studded ankle boot just to give it a more funky edge. I would team it with my ASOS leather biker jacket

 and a cool clutch.

If your not brave enough(as I know alot of people are afraid of colour) or don't like the mustard clutch, you could opt for a plain black one, something like this tasseled one would add a cool twist to this outfit also. Well, I think so anyways :)

Now for the hair! To me, an outfit like this should have relaxed hair. Nothing too fussy or overdone. Think sexy bed head hair or high ponytail. If opting for the ponytail look please leave it relaxed. If your not good with your hair, get your hairdresser to sort you out. I would curl the hair first with a large barreled tong, brush it out with a denman and then scrunch some mousse into it and defuse it, just to give it a more natural feel. Once your hair has been styled and you wish to try the ponytail option, turn your head upside down and with either a bungee bobble or a regular hair bobble (always matching the colour of your hair bobble to the colour of your hair) loosely gather it to the crown of your head and put into a ponytail. Here are the images of the hair I suggested. Both styles created by me. The ponytail here was created for a gym shoot but I really think it would work well with this overall look.

Hope this hasn't been too boring for you all, hee hee. I just really miss writing up my blog and thought I'd take the opportunity while my hubby is looking after our daughter.
I am going back to work on Thursday 5th December so if anyone wants their hair styled for that special night out, give me a shout. ;-)

Thank you for reading my blog - xo

Pregnancy Hair

Being a hairdresser can bring lots of challenges. One of which is dealing with pregnancy hair. I have helped  many of my clients through their pregnancies and tried my best to protect their hair. Unfortunately there is no miracle cure and every single person is different. Pregnancy affects every woman differently. Some keep their hair the whole way through the pregnancy and don't start to lose it until their babies are about 3months old. Others find their hair goes very fine and lack lustre throughout the whole 9 months, and its only once the baby is born and they aren't having to use all their extra vitamins etc to grow and protect their baby, that their hair starts to go back to normal (although define normal these days). Due to our wee babies having to take all our goodness to grow and stay healthy in our wombs, our bodies sometimes suffer. All worth it in the end mind you ;)
I myself am 7months pregnant and have found that my hair and nails have become more fragile and weak. When I first found out I was pregnant, I went from taking folic acid to pregnacare plus with omega 3. It has every vitamin needed to help you and your baby. The omega 3 helps with brain and eye development. Once my baby is born, I will be taking a skin, nail and hair supplement. This will help with the control of hair loss.

Tips for washing your hair to avoid tats (so not pulling out any hair - we need to keep it)

Always try to wash your hair in the shower standing up as this will help with the tangles and knots. Use a wide toothed comb to comb the conditioner through. Leave on for at least 5mins. Never towel dry your hair. This causes friction and creates tats. Pat dry your hair with your towel and use the wide tooth comb again to comb through your wet hair before applying any product.

***

When your hair is damp and just before you blowdry it, here are a few of my favourite thickening products. Every little helps as they say ;)

***

Bumble & Bumble Prep Spray and Thickening Hairspray, both can be applied when hair is damp and help give hair a boost.
Also, a good mousse, Wella do a fab one called extra volume wet mousse.

***
Some products and accessories I recommend to use are -

* The Loreal Elvive extraordinary oil is amazing and is only £9.99 so won't break the bank.
* Tangle Teezers are amazing! They don't pull your hair or rip it out, they help reduce the amount of hair that comes out with every brush.
* Also, if you can use a hair bobble that has no metal connection, this helps with hair breakage.

Boots and Body Shop sell these products :)

***

Be good to your hair and skin throughout your pregnancy and drink plenty of water! Nettle leaf tea is also great to help promote healthy hair, nails, skin and bones :)

Hope this helps, even a little. Thank you for reading - xo

Loving Art - A Natural Talent

Some people are born with god given talents. They can create something beautiful out of nothing. This talent has been gifted to my friend Rachel Hutchinson, now White.
Her ability to work with textiles and paints are incredible.

If you had an old run down chair or piece of furniture that was sentimental but on its last legs, you could talk to Rachel. She will lovingly sew up a new life for your belongings.

Rachel's work can be seen in the maternity ward of the Ulster Hospital, which I will have the honour of looking at in August when I go to have my first child.

When Rachel got married, she hand sewed her own wedding bouquet, it was exquisite, as I'm sure you will agree from this photograph. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the dream of making them for other brides will be fulfilled and you too will be able to have your very own personalised bouquet from her shop on etsy.com (not yet set up) - Yeah!, it's now set up. Here is the link to follow - http://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/GingerbirdBouquets?ref=seller_info_count

This biography is taken from Rachel's website, http://www.rachelhutchinson.com/

Biography
Rachel Hutchinson is a Textile Artist from County Antrim who has exhibited in a variety of galleries in Belfast, London, Reading, Halifax and Brighton and has received a number of awards for her artwork. Following her 1st class Textile Art degree in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire in 2003, she moved on to become ‘Product Development Executive’ for a leading homewares company in Manchester before returning to Belfast to start her own business in 2006. Rachel recently produced the Major Textile commission for the Ulster Hospital maternity unit, and a textile installation piece entitled ‘Fragment’ for Windsor Woman’s Centre, funded by ‘Arts & Business’ and Stratagem.
“Layering textures, I combine vintage fabrics, papers and paints with detailed stitch-work. I use hand-embroidered mending and traditional patchwork techniques in combination with contemporary compositions which serve as decorative pieces of artwork, while suggesting an undercurrent of contained history, narrative and identity.”
Working primarily to either public or private commission, Rachel strives to work with each individual client to create something distinctive, unique and precious to them.

I am very proud of Rachel and her work.
Please check her out and see for yourself.
Thank you - xo

love and the shoreline

Every now and then inspiration strikes and in the world of creativity this brings people together.

I have been blessed throughout my hairdressing career to work with some crazy talented people and this shoot was no different. I think the bar was most definitely raised!

Wedding stylist and event designer Alise Taggart of http://www.alisetaggart.com has worked with one of my all time favourite photographers, Elizabeth Messina, so when I was first asked to create the hair for this shoot I of course jumped at the chance. Alise found Paula O'hara while looking for her own wedding photographer and like me fell totally in love with her work. To me, Paula O'hara is right up there in my most admired photographer list. The work Paula creates with natural light is just breathtaking. http://www.paulaohara.com So when these two creative forces got together to create a wedding shoot, I knew it could only be one thing.........MAGICAL!!!

I couldn't wait to work with Paula again and knowing that make-up artist Jennifer Ireland, http://www.jenniferirelandmakeup.co.uk was on board, well, it was a no brainer really, heehee. My wee dream team were back together! Although, I won't lie to you, deep down I was a little scared! Could I achieve and create the hair to match up with such wonderful expectations?! This was a biggy!

Michael Toman owner of Story of Eve collaborated with his sister Paula O'hara to create the most beautiful video of this shoot. It can be seen here - http://vimeo.com/67420304

We went to Whiterocks Beach in Portrush for this shoot and as we had already postponed the shoot from our original date due to our Northern Irish weather, we just had to grab the bull by the horns and work around the wind and rain. Which our two models Ruta Mineikyte and Piaras Smyth did brilliantly.

Due to shooting on the beach there was no electricity so I had already prepped Ruta's hair in my house before we set off. This meant that everything else could be finished on location and I had to get creative which was lots of fun and challenging at the same time. I'm  6 1/2 months pregnant and 5ft 1" tall, so trying to reach two nearly 6ft models was I'm sure, funny to watch :)

There were too many wonderful aspects and elements to this shoot for me to pick a favourite. From the flowers created by Tim of Floral Earth, http://www.floralearth.co.uk to the macaroons lovingly made by JBird Bakery http://www.jbirdbakery.com the shoot came together beautifully.

Paula and Alise's vision was well and truly achieved that day. They even managed to bring a stunning horse into the mix. These two are a team to be watching out for.

Please click the following link to view for yourself the stunning work these girls created

A Beautiful and Unique Wedding

Last year I was asked by my friend and makeup artist Jennifer Ireland to set up a stall to talk about hair and do some demonstrations at a charity night she was organising to raise money for a Northern Ireland charity Pretty in Pink. Of course I said yes. I got to meet lots of lovely ladies and raise money for a great cause. At the event I had the pleasure of meeting one of the loveliest girls I have ever met. After talking to her about wedding hair and life in general she booked me to create her own wedding hair. This lovely lady was Abigail and here is her blog about her wedding day. It is to this day one of the most unique and beautifully crafted weddings I have ever had the privilege to be apart of. Abigail and her now husband Ryan own their own business were they hand stitch and sew beautiful household pieces. With their combined skills they handmade and crafted their whole wedding, right down to the gorgeous cake. It was fabulous!!!! Follow the link below to read and see some pictures from their wedding. Enjoy! Xo

Love Hair-Love Life: Attune Womenswear Web Launch

Love Hair-Love Life: Attune Womenswear Web Launch: In November 2012 I was approached by John Dermott, Lesley-Ann O'Donnell and Theresa Hannon of marketing company AV Browne http://www.avb...

Attune Womenswear Web Launch

In November 2012 I was approached by John Dermott, Lesley-Ann O'Donnell and Theresa Hannon of marketing company AV Browne http://www.avb-group.com to create the hair for an up and coming campaign they were working on. It was for a new clothing company called Attune Womenswear - http://www.attunewomenswear.com
Of course I jumped at the chance. The whole range is very soft and light and is designed to work with women's body temperatures to make them feel as comfortable as possible while still looking stylish. My mum went through treatment for cancer and if this brand had of been available then it would of helped greatly with her constantly fluctuating temperatures. It's such a great product for anyone who is active and always on the go. The creator of the company Clare Marie Passmore of Clear Spirit Design collaborated with local Belfast Designer Bronagh Griffin of Nineteenthirty Atelier, http://www.nineteenthirty.co.uk to create each piece. They hired the crazy talented stylist Catherine McKenna to put the outfits together. You can contact her via email on cgmckenna@btinternet.com for her details.

The shoot took place over three days and I got to meet some amazing people and work on a great project. IL Pirata in Ballyhackamore, The Mac in Belfast and Mount Stewart in Newtownards held host to us and photographer Nick Patterson owner/director of Sync Space from Bangor http://www.syncimaging.com did an amazing job with help from his assistant Karen Hamilton and on day three we used his studio for all the finishing touches. His studio was such a cool space to work from.

The team from AV Browne were fantastic and I can see why Clare choose them to help launch her website and brand. They had a girl, Emma Kenny, on placement who came along to help out and get some on sight training. John and Theresa were so professional and made us all feel so comfortable and welcome. They knew exactly what they wanted and how to get us to work together as a team. I would definitely recommend them to any business out there needing a marketing team. I got to work along side makeup artist Lorna McSloy http://www.lornamcsloy.com and Andy Yoong who works freelance and is the owner of Honcho Designs http://www.honchodesigns.com . He provided the videography for the shoot on behalf of Street Monkey. He was so down to earth and you hardly even knew he was there shooting us. He was great. You can see the videos on Vimeo. Here is a link to one of them http://www.vimeo.com/60560786

Model Agency Models EG provided us with the models for the shoot. Shannon, Jan and Heather were so professional and lovely girls to work with.

Please check out Attunes website and spread the word http://www.attunewomenswear.com Working on shoots like these make my job. I just LOVE being able to create hair and work with such amazing talented people.

Stylish to a T!

Every now and then someone comes along who just gets it and to me that lady is Diane Kruger. From her hair and make-up to her fashion sense, she just knows how to dress for her shape and age. She never seems to get it wrong. Even when its wrong she's right :-) I'm loving her effortless styling for her new movie roll in The Host. Both black outfits both totally different. She rocked her subtle floral black dress from Thakoon's new Autumn/Winter Collection and then her casual take on the LBD with her Victoria Beckham sleeveless black and white blazer finished with a crisp white shirt. Loved them!

Diane's hair and make-up is always effortless too. She is never afraid to try new styles or make her own trends. Whether its a high ponytail or a soft updo she knocks it out of the park everytime.

Diane Kruger is a true style icon.

Sleeping Beauty

If you haven't heard of these rollers, where have you been hiding? ;-) No more waking up with messy hair, no more excuses! They are so easy to put in and so soft you hardly feel like you have them in.

Wee Tip no1 - Make sure when you're blow drying your hair you use the nozzle on your drier(very important). This helps control the air flow and stops the hair from getting fly away and reduces the frizz.

Wee Tip No2 - Try not to put the rollers in too much of a formal formation. Put some to the side, upside down etc. This helps give a lovely natural flow to the curls. Practice what looks best for your hair type and have fun with it :-)

Wee Tip No3 - When winding your hair around the roller always make sure you tuck the end in smoothly and don't let it stick out as this will result in your curls having an unsightly tick at the end.

Finally when you are removing your rollers in the morning don't just pull them out any shape. Take each roller and gently pull it out with one hand while using the other to help define each curl.

Finish your look with a shine spray or hairspray.

Now go have fun and enjoy practising your home curls  ;-)

To Be ... Or Not to Be ... Best Dressed

This January welcomed with open arms the 70th Golden Globes Awards and I was NOT disappointed with the glamour. Well, when I say disappointed, I was taken back with a few choices but I'm only going to show my favourites as from this statement that follows you will be able to pick out from the images on http://www.style.com who I did not like, hee hee. Too many stars did an Angelia Jolie with leg split dresses and I personally didn't like them, but then again, wouldn't the world be a very boring place if we were all the same?.....Yes ;)

Jessica Alba definitely stood out for me, her Oscar de la Renta gown was exquisite, her orange lipstick and 1940's inspired hair was just beautiful. Her stylist deserves a big fat juicy 10/10.

Zooey Dechannel also wore Oscar de la Renta and her hair was simple and elegant, the curled high ponytail is definitely going to be a big thing for 2013, well I think it should be anyways ;)

I was delighted to see two of Hollywood's most glamorous leading ladies rock their outfits and still keep themselves looking demure without the mutton dressed as lamb approach
.... Helen Mirren and Glenn Close I salute you both :)

 Glenn wore Zac Posen

Helen wore Badgley Mischka

Strapless dresses really did rock the red carpet this year , here are another two that really stood out for me. Both Jennifer's opted for soft up-do's and kept it simple and totally glamorous and gorgeous! LOVE them!

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture and a Salvatore Ferragamo Clutch

Jennifer  Garner wearing Vivienne Westwood Couture

Sienna Miller opted for a rather quirky 60's inspired outfit by Erdem. I love it but know it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.Her simple sleek back hair and natural makeup make it work.

...... And let's not forget the boys, they also rocked it this year and it was lovely to see some opting for the dickie bow ..... Here are some of my fav men :)

There were lots of cute couples rocking the red carpet at this years Golden Globes, here are my two favs.

Liev Schreiber wore Calvin Klein Collection and Naomi Watts wore Zac Posen

Ryan Seacrest wore Burberry Prorsum and Julianne Hough wore Monique Lhuillier while rocking a faux hawk, her hair was fabulous!

Head to http://www.style.com to view the whole gallery of fabulous gowns, hair and make-up and read the scoop on everything Golden Globes.

Have fun trying out the hairstyles the next time your heading out - xo
